Charlotte, NC – June 9, 2010 – On Monday afternoon at various sites throughout the world, numerous players attempted to qualify for the 2010 United States Open, to be contested this year on June 17-20 at historic Pebble Beach Golf Links in Monterey, California. At the conclusion of 36 holes of stroke play at 15 different sites, a total of 13 eGolf Tour players managed to secure their spot in the U.S. Open, thus putting themselves one step closer to claiming one of golf’s oldest titles.
The site with the best eGolf representation – and the strongest field – was clearly the Columbus, Ohio site, featuring both Brookside G&CC and The Lakes G&CC. Six current and former eGolf Tour players manage to navigate their way through 36 holes in central Ohio to move on to Pebble Beach. Former PGA TOUR winner Eric Axley, who claimed his first career top-5 finish on the eGolf Tour just one month ago, posted rounds of 64-63—127 to win medalist honors by an astounding seven shots. The 2006 Valero Texas Open champion will be making his sixth career start in the U.S. Open. His best finish came in 2008 at Torrey Pines when he posted rounds of 69-79-71-69—288 en route to a T9 finish.
The best story of the day may have been that of 2010 eGolf Tour member Ty Tryon. A former child prodigy and PGA TOUR member at age 17, Tryon posted rounds of 64-74—138 to hang on and qualify at Woodmont C.C. in Rockville, Maryland. Tryon had made four starts on the 2010 eGolf Tour without a cut made prior to qualifying for Pebble Beach. It will mark his first appearance in the national championship.
