Pooler, GA After a four and a half hour weather delay on Thursday afternoon suspended play, the second round of the eGolf Professional Tour's Savannah Quarters Classic was finally completed at 2:30 PM on Friday. Halfway through the tournament, past tour champion William McGirt found himself atop the leaderboard with rounds of 67-71—138 and a one-shot lead.

On Thursday, players in the morning wave battled 25 mph winds and gusts of up to 35 mph, thus turning both Savannah Quarters Country Club and The Club at Savannah Harbor on par with the Pine Valleys of the world. A plethora of scores in the 80s left the door open for players in the afternoon wave to make up some ground. Starting at 5:00 PM on Thursday, the afternoon wave played as much golf as possible before play was called at 6:10 PM, thus allowing them to experience some of the difficulty of the morning times.

"We definitely got the best end of the draw yesterday," said McGirt. "I only had to play two holes in that weather."

McGirt, who opened with a round of 4-under 67 at Savannah Harbor on Wednesday, managed to play only two holes on Thursday night and wasn't able to generate much momentum in that short period.

Roberto CastroRoberto Castro"I actually bogeyed one of my two holes last night, but came back today and played great early on. I was 4-under on my round before I caught a flyer on 14 and made double-bogey."

After a late-day bogey at the par-4 second hole on Thursday, the former Wofford College star rebounded with birdies at Nos. 4 and 7 to turn at 1-under 35 on Friday morning. A quick start to the back nine netted birdies at 10, 11 and 13, before the errant approach to 14 set him back to 2-under on his round. A follow-up bogey at the par-4 16th took McGirt to 1-under on his round, where he would eventually finish after pars at 17 and 18.

Always known as a player to wear his emotions on his sleeve, McGirt admitted that patience and intelligence were the keys to playing golf in extreme wind conditions.

"In wind like this, you really just have to take advantage of the downwind holes, because the holes into the wind are playing so hard," McGirt said. "You just try to stay patient and make some pars."

A T90 finish at PGA TOUR Q-School last fall gave the Boiling Springs, SC native conditional status on the Nationwide Tour, meaning he will get in to a few events here and there, having to make the most of his opportunities in hopes of improving his standing prior to the tour's multiple re-shuffles.

Jon KennedyJon KennedyWith 19 players within four shots of his lead, McGirt realizes that a few holes on Friday and a marathon on Saturday leaves a lot of time to back up, or to pull ahead.

"I'll just go out there and try to hold on, try to make a few birdies early on. With this wind, everyone is so bunched up that you really have to keep the pedal to the metal."

Five players are tied for second, one shot behind McGirt through 36 holes. Roberto Castro, Jonathan Fricke, Jhared Hack, Jon Kennedy and Scott Parel are in a five-way tie for second with two-round totals of 5-under 139.

The round of the day, and likely the tournament, came from Kennedy, who lives in Hawkinsville, GA. The former Georgia Southern golfer notched seven birdies against a lone bogey to record a stunning 6-under 66 at Savannah Quarters in arduous conditions to say the least. Playing in the later wave of the second round, Kennedy was one of only four players in the 204-man field to break 70 in the round.

Castro, a former Georgia Tech "All American," is in familiar territory near the tournament lead in Savannah. In August of 2009, the Alpharetta, GA native carded rounds of 65-66-69-69—269 to claim the tour's Championship at Savannah Harbor – his third eGolf Tour win.

The 36-hole cut fell at 4-over 148, with 73 players making it through to the final two rounds.

Third-round play began at 3:50 PM on Friday, but was suspended due to darkness at 6:10, with all 71 players still on the course. The leaders group of McGirt, Castro and Fricke completed two holes in the third round, and will begin play on the par-5 third at Savannah Quarters.

Play will resume at 8:00 AM on Saturday morning and will continue throughout the day until all 72 holes are complete. Players will remain in their round three pairings for the final 36 holes.

The tournament is open to the public and free of charge.
