Concord, NC – Longtime eGolf Tour player David Robinson and veteran Nationwide Tour player Joe Daley are tied for the lead through 36 holes of the eGolf Tour's Cabarrus Classic presented by VisitCabarrus.com. Sitting tied at 9-under 135 with two rounds left to play, the twosome holds a narrow advantage over a stacked field of players, including a familiar 19-year-old Hawaiian star.
The Cabarrus Classic is being contested this week at both Cabarrus Country Club and River Run Country Club, just north of Charlotte, NC. Robinson and Daley each played Cabarrus during Wednesday's opening round, carding rounds of 67 and 66, respectively.
The par-4 16th at River RunEntering the second round, Robinson was looking to keep a hot putter going on River Run's daunting-yet-flawless putting surfaces. But first, he would have to overcome a slightly errant start.
"I missed the fairway to the left of No. 1 and got some mud on my ball, pulled my approach left and wound up making an 8-footer for par," Robinson said. "After that, I hit eight straight greens and just got going. That par save was big."
Birdies on Nos. 4 and 6 put Robinson at 2-under 34 on the turn, and he would go on to add three more birdies against a lone bogey at the par-4 16th to finish with a round of 4-under 68. A calming effect shrouded Robinson during his round as pressure was eased off of an already-stellar long game.
"I hit a lot of greens, but didn't hit it close that often," Robinson said. "I was putting good enough to where I didn't have to play too aggressive, so that certainly makes things easier."
A native of Sandersville, GA, Robinson is a conditional Nationwide Tour player this year. In turn, his status number will only let him into a few events, but allows for the chance to improve his number with good play in those events.
"As it is right now, I'm playing out here – but (my status) is in the back of my mind," said Robinson. "I wish I was on the Nationwide Tour full time, so I'll have to make the best of my opportunities when I'm out there."
In 2008, Robinson became the tour's first player to accumulate single-season earnings eclipsing the $100,000 mark. That year, the former Georgia State & College standout collected three wins, 12 top-10 finishes, and was 16 for 16 in cuts made on the year. Ironically, in 2009, Robinson missed the cut at the Cabarrus Classic, thus ending a streak of 51 consecutive made stroke-play cuts on the eGolf Tour.
Daley, a veteran tour player out of Scottsdale, AZ, began his round at River Run on the arduous closing nine in style with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 10-12. A fast start soon gave way to an erratic stretch as he played Nos. 15-18 and Nos. 1-5 to the tune of three birdies, three pars and three bogeys. A closing quartet of pars placed Daley atop the leaderboard with Robinson and with a round of 3-under 69 on one of the tour's most difficult venues.
Daley was a member of the PGA TOUR in 1996 and 1998 and the Nationwide Tour in 1997, 1999-2002 and 2004-07 and 2009. A former Old Dominion University standout, he has two Nationwide Tour titles to his credit with wins at the 1997 Louisiana Open and the 2005 Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open.
In his first full season on the eGolf Tour, Daley had one made cut and one missed cut coming into this week's Cabarrus Classic. At the season-opening Palmetto Hall Championship, he recorded rounds of 67-73-73-71—284 to notch a fourth-place finish.
Six players are tied for third place at 6-under 138. Among the players in that grouping is Tadd Fujikawa of Honolulu, HI. The former junior phenom has rounds of 68-70 thus far this week, and is still looking for his first top-30 finish of the season after T32 and T39 efforts, respectively, in the first two events of 2010.
Playing as an amateur at age 15, Fujikawa qualified for the 2006 U.S. Open, in turn becoming the youngest golfer ever to do so. In 2007, he made the cut in a PGA TOUR event at the Sony Open in Hawaii. At the age of 16 years, 4 days, he was the second youngest player to ever achieve that feat.
The 36-hole cut fell at even-par 144, with 71 players making it through to the final two rounds. The third round will begin at 8:20 AM at Cabarrus Country Club on Friday, with players playing in threesomes off of Nos. 1 and 10.
