Savannah, GA – August 27, 2009 – Sound familiar? Golf tournament in Savannah; 162 of the best players in the world; Mother Nature is the leader in the clubhouse. Play in the second round of the eGolf Professional Tour's inaugural Championship at Savannah Harbor was suspended due to darkness at 7:45 PM on Thursday, with half of the field still on the golf course. After first-round play on Wednesday was delayed until Thursday for part of the field, another wave of morning storms passed through the area, in turn causing a three hour and 20 minute delay on round two tee times. Resumption of the second round will begin at 7:30 AM on Friday morning. After the conclusion of the second round, the field will be cut to the low 60 players and ties, with the third round beginning shortly thereafter.
The un-official overnight leader is Ian Schneider of Charlotte, NC. Schneider, who was one of 36 players onsite to complete his opening round on Thursday morning, began resumption of his first round on the par-4 seventh after finishing the night before with a birdie at the sixth.
"I came out this morning, tried to be conservative and wound up birdying No. 7, made another birdie on No. 8, and before I knew it, I was 7-under on that round," said Schneider, whose first-round 65 put him in a four-way tie for first with Roberto Castro, Josh McCumber and Chris McCartin.
In his second round, the former University of South Carolina golfer tried his best to stay patient amidst rain showers that peppered Southeast Georgia for much of the afternoon.
"The second round just felt like a different day and I tried my best not to get ahead of myself, or behind myself," said Schneider.
Schneider used three birdies on the opening nine of his second round to turn at 3-under 33. A bogey at the par-5 11th was offset by a birdie at the short par-4 14th, and Schneider would finish with a 3-under 69 and a 36-hole total of 10-under 134.
While his overnight lead is not official, it is a good sign for Schneider, who has only one made cut in 2009 – a T58 finish at the rain-shortened Savannah Quarters Championship in April, contested just up the road in Pooler. His rounds of 65-69 mark the first time that he has carded back-to-back rounds below par on tour since opening with rounds of 69-70 at the 2007 Stonebridge Classic.
Schneider was forced to wake early on Thursday with an alarm that sounded at 5:15 as he prepared to conclude his first round. Tomorrow will be a different story with the flip side of the draw treating him to a nice morning of sleeping in.
"I saw a buddy of mine after his first round on Wednesday and thought, ‘Must be nice to finish and go see a movie or something, relax a little bit.' I guess that's the boat I'm in now, so it's good."
Sitting two shots behind Schneider are Josh McCumber of Tampa, FL and Nate Lashley of Scottsdale, AZ, each at 8-under 136.
Lurking just three shots back and tied with Nic MacDonald of Zimbabwe is local favorite Tim O'Neal. The Savannah native has rounds of 69-68—137 under his belt and his third made cut of the tour's 2009 season. A former Nationwide Tour player, O'Neal's round of 4-under 68 was highlighted by a trifecta of birdies on Nos. 13-15. The Savannah native is coming off of his best finish of the season – a T26 effort at last week's South Charlotte Classic.
Players completing their second rounds on Friday morning should be at the cart staging area at 7:20 AM to proceed to their holes. At 7:30 AM, players will resume second-round play. At the conclusion of the second round, the field will be cut to the low 60 players and ties. The tournament is open to the public and free of charge.
