Salisbury, NC Emmett Turner (Augusta, GA) and Cameron Yancey (Blackstone, VA) posted matching rounds of 8-under 63 at the Country Club of Salisbury on Thursday to share the lead in the opening round of the eGolf Tour's second annual Bolle Classic.

Turner, a former Augusta State golfer, is on a bit of cloud nine these days after his alma mater claimed the NCAA Championship a week and a half ago over a "heavily favored" Oklahoma State squad at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, TN. The Jaguars defeated the Cowboys 2-1-2 to win the team match play title in the school's only Division I sport.

"They've been pretty good for a while, so it was nice to see them play well when it really mattered," said Turner, who graduated from ASU in December of 2005. "It's funny, everyone acted like it was such a huge upset, but they were No. 5 in the country going into the week. I'm sitting there thinking, ‘Why aren't they getting any credit?'"

After starting his 2010 rather slowly with a missed cut and a T65 finish, Turner has posted three straight top-20 finishes heading into this week's event. Could his good play be attributed to Augusta State's success and the inspiration it provided?

Not exactly.

Cameron YanceyCameron Yancey"It was nice to see, but it didn't really do anything to help me mentally or with my game. These are two completely different worlds (professional v. college golf), but it was still great," said Turner. "I practice with some of those guys at the school facility, so I'm happy for them.

At the Country Club of Salisbury on Wednesday, Turner would get off to a quick start with five birdies in his first eight holes.

"I missed a 15-footer on No. 9 to shoot 29, but then birdied 10 to make up for it," said Turner after his round.

A bogey on the par-4 11th would give way to birdies at 13, 16 and 18 to close out his lowest career eGolf Tour round.

"Today I did everything well. This season has been up and down because I'll putt good and hit it bad; then I'll hit it good and putt poorly," said Turner, a conditional member of the Nationwide Tour this year. "In turn, I would be stuck on 1- or 2-under for my rounds. Today was good, so hopefully I'll keep it going."

The round was especially nice for Yancey after a two-month break from the tour during which he witnessed the birth of his first child – a baby girl. Born on May 17th – ironically the same day as Yancey's birthday – he was a little behind on sleep and golf when he showed up at the tour's HGM Hotels Classic two weeks ago with rounds of 70-71 and a missed cut.

"My game was rusty at Rock Barn a few weeks back, so I played a lot last week just to get back into the flow of things," said Yancey. "I want to finish in the Q-School money (tour pays for PGA TOUR Q-School for the top 20 members), but I really need to push just to get into the Tour Championship."

Beginning on the par-4 first at Salisbury, Yancey would birdie Nos. 2 and 5 to start his opening round. Following a bogey on the par-3 sixth that would drop him to 1-under, the former University of Virginia standout would go on a tear throughout the classic Donald Ross-designed Salisbury layout. Birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 would be followed by another double at 12 and 13 to get to 5-under on his day.

"I failed to birdie the par-5 15th, and that didn't settle too well with me. So, I went out and birdied 16, then hit it close on 17, and rolled in an 18-footer for birdie at 18," said Yancey. "It was a nice way to finish the round off."

Prior to his hiatus, Yancey was five-for-five in cuts made on the season, with his best finish coming at The Championship at St. James Plantation (T11) – his last start before the leave. On Wednesday, it was Yancey's short game that did the majority of the damage.

Lee WilliamsLee Williams"I made every putt I looked at today. The greens are so perfect, that all you have to do is get it started on line," said Yancey. "I've had a lot of rounds where I hit it better, but not many where I putted better."

Yancey finished T34 at the 2002 PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament to earn his TOUR card for the 2003 season. In 23 events played that year, his best finish would come at the HP Classic of New Orleans, where rounds of 66-68-68-79—281 would leave him T56 on the week.

The round of the day at tournament co-host Sapona Country Club came from two-time United States Walker Cup team member Lee Williams of Alexander City, AL. The former Auburn University "All American" recorded an eight-birdie round of 64 on the Ellis Maples-designed layout in Lexington, NC.

His lone bogey came at the par-3 13th (his fourth hole of the day), but that was quickly erased with a birdie-par-eagle-birdie stretch to close out his opening nine on Nos. 15-18.

Traditionally, this is a decent week for the former Nationwide Tour player. Williams competed in the U.S. Open – contested this week at Pebble Beach Golf Links – from 2005 through 2007, with his best finish being a T40 effort at Winged Foot in 2006.

Second-round play in the Bolle Classic will begin at 8:00 AM on Thursday morning at both Salisbury and Sapona. The tournament is open to the public and free of charge.
