Quintana Roo, Mexico – February 23, 2010 – Former eGolf Professional Tour players Matt Bettencourt and Brendon de Jonge shared T40 finishes at the PGA TOUR’s Mayakoba Golf Classic at Riviera Maya-Cancun over the weekend, leading all eGolf players in the 132-man field.
De Jonge, who entered the week with two missed cuts in four starts, opened his Mexico stint with rounds of 70-68-67 to vault into a tie for 10th through 54 holes. In Sunday’s final round, de Jonge faltered early with a bogey-double bogey-bogey stretch on Nos. 4-6 that would send him out with a 4-over 40. A birdie at the par-3 10th was quickly offset with another double bogey at the par-4 14th, and the Zimbabwean was left with a closing round of 5-over 76 – thus falling 30 spots back into a tie for 40th.
For Bettencourt, 2010 has yet to shine with the luster of a 2009 that saw him accumulate over $740,000 in earnings and finish No. 111 on the money list. In six starts thus far this year, Bettencourt has three made cuts and three missed cuts, alternating each one after a missed cut at the season-opening Sony Open in Hawaii.
At Mayakoba, the former Modesto Junior College golfer put forth rounds of 71-68-69-73—281 to notch his second-best finish of the year. Early year struggles are likely due to a lack of birdies week in and week out for Bettencourt. In 2009, he ranked 36th in Birdie Average, while in 2010 he has slipped to 143rd.
Other former eGolf Tour players making the cut in Mexico include Kris Blanks (T59), David Lutterus (T61) and Jerod Turner (T71).
