WEEKEND UPDATE: Gomez Wins Chitimacha Louisiana Open for First Nationwide Tour Title

Fabian Gomez

Broussard, LA – March 29, 2010 – Former eGolf Tour player Fabian Gomez of Argentina carded rounds of 70-68-67-64—269 to claim his first Nationwide Tour title in runaway fashion at the Chitimacha Louisiana Open, winning by six shots over a stout field in the tour's first stateside event of 2010.
Gomez began the final round trailing 54-hole leader Andrew Buckle of Australia by two shots at 8-under 205. Buckle, who actually birdied the first hole of the day, struggled immensely on a day fit for swirling winds with seven bogeys and a double-bogey en route to a final-round 77.
Buckle's struggles opened the door for Gomez, and he managed to walk right through. A 3-under 33 on the outward nine gave Gomez the lead with just nine holes to play, but instead of sitting on his heels, he attacked the closing nine at Le Triomphe Country Club. Birdies at Nos. 12 and 13 took Gomez to 5-under on his round, and a follow-up birdie at 16 gave him full control of the tournament, although he still wasn't sure if that was the case.
"I really didn't pay much attention to the leaderboards until after I birdied 16," Gomez told tour officials after his round. "I asked my caddie where we stood. Then I asked if I was very close to second place."
Not realizing he was running away with the event, Gomez tacked on yet another birdie at 17 to get to 7-under for his round, where he would eventually finish with a final-round 64 to win for the first time on the Nationwide Tour. His round of 64 was the low final round by a staggering three shots, in turn lending testimony to just how good a score it was.
"It was the best round of my career under the conditions," said Gomez. "To win here on the Nationwide Tour gets me one step closer to my goal of reaching the PGA TOUR."
Finishing in a tie for second was past eGolf Tour champion Kyle Reifers of Columbus, OH. Reifers, who won the tour's Charlotte National Open in 2006, overcame opening rounds of 70-71 to post weekend rounds of 67-67 and finish at 275 – six shots shy of Gomez's unreachable pace.
The finish was the second-best of Reifers' Nationwide Tour career, dating back to that win in 2006 on the eGolf Tour. Following his win at the Charlotte National Open (the first start of his pro career), Reifers Monday qualified for the following week's Chattanooga Classic on the Nationwide Tour and went on to win in a playoff. The former Wake Forest star played the Nationwide Tour full time in 2006, 2008 and 2009, and played the PGA TOUR in 2007. His T2 effort in Louisiana was his eighth top-10 finish in 76 Nationwide Tour starts during that time frame.
Former eGolf Tour player and Walker Cup standout Cameron Tringale notched a T8 finish at the Chitimacha Louisiana Open. A 2010 PGA TOUR member, Tringale bumped down to the Nationwide Tour last week after not getting into the Arnold Palmer Invitational. In five starts on the PGA TOUR, the former Georgia Tech “All American” has four missed cuts and a T17 result at the Puerto Rico Open to his name.
Other former eGolf Tour players to make the cut in Broussard include Sal Spallone (T11), Casey Wittenberg (T14), Garth Mulroy (T18), Brent Delahoussaye (T21), Rob Oppenheim (T27), Luke List (T27), Kevin Kisner (T27), Gary Christian (T38), Darron Stiles (T38), Keegan Bradley (T38), Aron Price (T38), Major Manning (T48) and Ted Brown (66). - At the PGA TOUR's Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, two-time eGolf Tour winner Steve Marino and 2010 Puerto Rico Open champion Derek Lamely were the low tour representatives with a pair of T11 finishes. Marino carded rounds of 70-70-72-72—284 to record his third top-15 finish of the 2010 season. The finish moved him up to No. 31 on the TOUR's money list and No. 37 on the FedExCup points list. Marino was one of only seven players in the field to card all four rounds at par or better. For Lamely, the T11 finish marked his fourth made cut in a row – a streak that includes his maiden TOUR title at this year's Puerto Rico Open. His is a tale of what could have been with a final-round 73 that was punctuated by four bogeys on the front nine of Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club. Other eGolf Tour players to make the cut in Orlando include Kris Blanks (T52) and Matt Every (T52). For complete results from the Arnold Palmer Invitational on pgatour.com, click here.
