By the time Haas, the tournament’s 54-hole leader, arrived at the par-3 13th in Sunday’s final round, the event had been all but decided. Six birdies in his first 13 holes gave Haas a comfortable cushion and left the rest of the field to jockey for positioning behind his torrid pace.
At 8-under par for the day through 13 holes, Lovemark had an outside shot of adding pressure to Haas, but a par-bogey-par-par finish over his last four holes left the former NCAA Individual Champion with a final-round 65 and a 72-hole tally of 20-under 268.
For Schultz, seven consecutive pars to open his final round quickly removed thoughts of capturing the title, but a five-birdie effort on the closing nine at Highland Springs Country Club vaulted him into a share for second with a final-round 66. The T2 finish was Schultz’s best on the Nationwide Tour since winning the 2005 Chattanooga Classic.
Schultz has two top-10s on the eGolf Tour this season, with his best finish coming at the River Hills Classic in May, a T8.
Lovemark’s T2 finish kept him atop the 2010 Nationwide Tour money list, with $393,288 in earnings. The former Southern Cal star has a stout six top-3 finishes, including a win at the Mexico Open Bicentenary.
eGolf Tour player Kyle Thompson, who entered the final round in a tie for second, could not catch Haas in the final round as the former South Carolina Gamecock standout was only able to post five birdies against three bogeys on Sunday. For Thompson, the T5 finish was his second top-5 of the 2010 season and marked his sixth top-25 in his last eight starts on tour. His $23,750 payday moved him from No. 31 to No. 20 on the Nationwide Tour money list.
Five-time eGolf Tour winner Roberto Castro, who earned his spot in Springfield via a runner-up finish at the prior week’s Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open, finished T16 following rounds of 69-68-69-67—273. In just two weeks, Castro has gone from having zero status on the Nationwide Tour to No. 53 on the money list, and will look to lock up his 2011 PGA or Nationwide Tour card this fall with continued starts.
Tommy BiershenkLongtime eGolf Tour member Fernando Mechereffe, who Monday qualified for the event, carded rounds of 70-67-70-67—274 en route to a T22 finish – his best result in seven career starts on the Nationwide Tour. Mechereffe’s top-25 will allow him to compete in the Knoxville News Sentinel Open on August 26-29. The Nationwide Tour, which allows players to top-25 their way into the next event, is off this week.
Tommy Biershenk and Brett Munson were the two eGolf Tour players to earn exemptions into the Price Cutter Charity Championship this summer. In 2009, the eGolf Tour became the first developmental tour to secure multiple Nationwide Tour exemptions and continued to do the same for the 2010 season, with four total exemptions granted. Biershenk and Munson earned their spots for their respective play in the Bolle Classic and the Forest Oaks Classic – with Biershenk winning the former and Munson losing the latter in a two-hole playoff.
Biershenk, who made his 116th career Nationwide Tour start in Springfield (he was a full member from 2000-2003), posted opening rounds of 66-65—131 to enter the weekend in a tie for second, trailing 36-hole leader Kyle Thompson by one shot.
As one of the most dominant players on the country’s de facto No. 3 tour, Biershenk knew his game was up-to-par with 36 holes left to play.
"This year I've had a good year on the eGolf Tour," said Biershenk after Friday’s second round. "I had a good run there where I finished third, second, first and then second, but then I went into a little lull there for a couple weeks. But I'm feeling about the same now as I did when I was playing really well and giving myself opportunities to win golf tournaments."
The former Clemson Tiger star would struggle over the weekend, posting rounds of 76-72 to fall into a tie for 51st. His third-round 76 tied the highest score recorded on Saturday and dropped him 33 spots into a tie for 35th entering Sunday’s final round. At 2-under for his final round and staging a respectable comeback, Biershenk suffered a momentum-crushing triple-bogey at the par-3 13th to end any hopes of sneaking into the top 25.
Munson, the 2010 Jack Nicklaus Award winner as the nation’s top Division II golfer at the University of North Alabama, was making his first career Nationwide Tour start in Springfield. Rounds of 72-78—150 gave Munson a missed cut in his first attempt, with three double-bogeys and a triple-bogey in 36 holes hurting his chances of seeing the weekend.
For the 23-year-old Munson, the experience likely provided a good barometer for what he has to work on in order to achieve his goal of competing on the PGA TOUR.
Other eGolf Tour players to make it to the weekend in Springfield include Daniel Summerhays (T9), Travis Bertoni (T9), Luke List (T16), Scott Brown (T22), Justin Hicks (T31), Billy Horschel (T37), Keegan Bradley (T37), Scott Stallings (T37), Sal Spallone (T47), Casey Wittenberg (T51), Nick Flanagan (T51) and Matthew Borchert (65). - At the PGA Championship, Brendon de Jonge was the low eGolf Tour player with rounds of 74-66-74-75—289 and a T48 finish. The week at Whistling Straits marked de Jonge’s second career start in a major championship, following a T33 finish at the U.S. Open in June of this year. His second-round 66 included nine birdies on the otherwise penal Pete Dye layout. For complete results from the PGA Championship, click here.
