Irving, TX – May 24, 2010 – Former eGolf Tour champion Blake Adams of Eatonton, GA went toe-to-toe with the PGA TOUR's best on Sunday afternoon at the HP Byron Nelson Championship. An untimely double-bogey at the 72nd hole on the TPC Las Colinas course cost Adams a chance at the win, but nevertheless left him with a T2 finish – the best of his rookie season on TOUR.
Entering the week, Adams had made 7 of 13 cuts on the season and put together earnings of $335,835 in what was a rather consistent rookie stint on the big tour. A T10 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am was the highlight of a season earned via a top-25 finish on the 2009 Nationwide Tour money list.
After opening with rounds of 66-64-70—200, Adams entered the final round trailing 54-hole leader Jason Day by two shots, but would find himself paired with Day in what would be an up-and-down Sunday just outside of Dallas.
A rocky front-nine 37 left Day in a tie for the lead with Adams with just nine holes to play in the final round, and that is when things got interesting.
Back-to-back birdies at Nos. 11 and 12 took Day back to two up on Adams with six holes to play, but a follow-up bogey at the arduous downhill par-4 13th left him only one up on his playing competitor. The two would trade punches for a few more holes before Adams was able to close the gap with a birdie at the par-5 16th to move the deficit back down to one shot with two to play.
With matching pars at the par-3 17th, Day and Adams moved to the par-4 18th with the tournament and the $1,170,000 winner's check on the line.
After blocking a 3-wood to the right and under a few tree branches, Adams watched as Day hit his tee shot down the right side of the fairway on the intimidating closing hole.
Day's approach to the 18th came up short and bounced into the pond fronting the short-left side of the green, but Adams was apparently unaware that the ball was in fact in the hazard.
"To be honest with you, I didn't know that he was in the water," said Adams. "If he was sitting there 2 feet or -- I had one option. So I hit the same shot -- I actually couldn't fire at the flag, but I was going kind of middle of the green and it just came out a little awkward."
Adams' approach nicked one of the branches in his line and bounced left across the fairway and into the same pond Day had found just minutes prior. After dropping, each player hit their fourth shot onto the green, where Day would eventually coax in the winning 15-foot putt. Adams, who arrived at the 18th tee in solo second, would two putt for a closing double-bogey that would drop him back into a three-way tie for second with Brian Gay and Jeff Overton.
Adams, by far one of the most easy-going players on any tour, took the whole experience in perspective and realized there was more to be learned than lost.
"You know, just it's my first time here, I was always a big fan of Mr. Nelson, and this is a tournament I always wanted to show up and play in, but it's a learning experience," Adams told the media following his round. "Hopefully I can use the good putting I had or some of the good bunker shots or wedges I hit and move forward. This will be a special place; it's my best finish. Hopefully I can improve on it for years to come."
With the finish, Adams earned $485,333 and moved up to No. 47 on the PGA TOUR money list and No. 53 on the FedExCup points list. A win would have been special for a multitude of reasons for Adams, not the least of which was to honor his father who passed away roughly six years ago. When asked why he wore all black on a hot Texas Sunday, Adams had a simple explanation that paid tribute to his father.
"My father passed away in 2004; it was Masters Sunday, Easter Sunday, the year that Mickelson won, and I've always worn black on Sunday, regardless if I was in first place, last place, didn't matter," said Adams, who was joined by his wife and children for his post-round interview on Sunday. "Last year I kind of steered away from it one time, and I was leading in Boise, and it was a hot day so I wore white. I played like a dog, so I went back to all black and just so that when things are good or bad I can think about my dad."
Adams is just a year and a half removed from his win at the eGolf Tour's Columbia Open in October of 2008, but he already seems to be a star in the making on the PGA TOUR.
Other eGolf Tour players to make the cut in Irving include James Nitties (T43), Jerod Turner (T48), Brent Delahoussaye (T53), Jason Schultz (T63) and Garth Mulroy T63). For complete results from HP Byron Nelson Championship on pgatour.com, please click here.
Scott BrownAt the Nationwide Tour's Rex Hospital Open, 2009 eGolf Tour leading money winner Scott Brown rode a first-round 62 to an 11-under 202 total en route to collecting a T6 finish – his best of the season – in the rain-shortened event. Brown, who amassed 2009 earnings of $142,362 on the eGolf Tour, was the tournament's first-round leader following his blazing 62, but backed it up with a second-round 72 before moving back into contention with a third-round 68. Multiple weather delays on Sunday, which set final-round tee times back as much as three hours, eventually forced officials to call the event after just 54 holes when host TPC Wakefield Plantation was deemed un-playable. In turn, Brown was left with a T6 finish, his second top-10 of the season and a welcome change of pace after posting back-to-back missed cuts coming into the week. The finish moved Brown from No. 50 to No. 38 on the 2010 Nationwide Tour money list. Ted Brown, Michael Clark II and David Mathis rounded out the eGolf Tour's representation inside the top 10, with each player collecting a T9 finish on the week. For Brown, rounds of 68-68-67—203 allowed the former VCU standout to claim his first top-10 result of his rookie season on the Nationwide Tour. Always one of the most consistent players on the eGolf Tour, Brown has notched six made cuts in nine starts on the Nationwide Tour this year and used his $13,750 payday in Raleigh to move from No. 106 to No. 69 on the money list – a jump of 37 positions. Other former eGolf Tour players to make the cut in Raleigh include Daniel Summerhays (T17), Daniel Barbetti (T17), Keven Fortin-Simard (T27), Kevin Chappell (T27), Chris Mundorf (T27), Clint Jensen (T27), Jamie Lovemark (T27), Chris Kirk (T27), Jess Daley (T40), Tommy Gainey (T40), Stephen Poole (T42), Bryan DeCorso (T42), Jin Park (T42), Nick Flanagan (T42), Justin Peters (T55), Darron Stiles (T55), Luke List (T63) and Ewan Porter (66).
