Former UCLA Star Gregor Main Soars Into 36-Hole Lead at eGolf West’s Avondale Open

By Stewart Moore
Palm Desert, CA – Former UCLA Bruin standout Gregor Main of Danville, CA opened his week at eGolf Tour West’s inaugural Avondale Open with a bogey on his third hole to fall quickly to 1-over par for the tournament. From there, 24-year-old has shined, posting 33 bogey-free holes en route to rounds of 68-64—132 (10-under), good for a two-shot lead heading into Friday’s final round of the first-year event.
Main’s week at host Avondale Golf Club quickly recovered from that early Wednesday bogey, with four birdies giving way to an opening-round 68.
On Thursday, Main shined early and often, notching birdies on Nos. 2, 6 and 9 to turn at 3-under 33. From, there, he kept his foot on the proverbial gas, birdieing 12, 13, 17 and 18 to round out a second-round 64 – the low round of the week.
Tom Whitney
Main’s eGolf West tenure began with back-to-back missed cuts, then took form with a T2 at the Championship at Morongo in March. Since then, he has posted three top-20 results in three starts, concluding with a T4 at the Championship at PGA West two weeks ago.
Main’s career in Westwood was of the stellar variety, being named an “All-American” twice in three years, PAC-10 “Freshman of the Year” in 2010, and earning runner-up honors at the prestigious Western Amateur in 2010.
Main leads eGolf West newcomer Tom Whitney of Fort Collins, CO by two shots entering tomorrow’s final round.
Whitney, 24, posted a 2-under 69 on day one, then went on a tear early during Thursday’s second round. After an unlikely bogey at the par-5 first, the former Air Force Academy star birdied Nos. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 to turn at 5-under 31. Whitney birdied 12 and 18 on the back nine to offset a bogey at the par-4 17th on his way to a second-round 65.
vWhitney won four college tournaments and set four various school-scoring records during his tenure as arguably the Falcons’ all-time best player. After competing in both the 2009 U.S. Amateur and U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, Whitney turned professional in 2010. The Lake Tahoe, CA native finished active duty with the Air Force in May 1st of this year after being attached to the 319th Missile Squadron at FE Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming.
The 36-hole cut fell at 2-under 140, with 20 players making it through to Friday’s final round. Final-round play at Avondale will begin at 7:00 AM. The tournament is open to the public and free of charge.
