Forty-One Bogey-Free Holes Deliver Carlton Oaks Title for Geoff Gonzalez

By Stewart Moore
Santee, CA – When 6-under par wins a professional golf tournament, common thought is that the demanding host venue delivered a number of bogeys and others, in turn leaving players to scramble for birdie opportunities on a limited number of holes. For Geoff Gonzalez of Diablo, CA, that arduous scoring layout worked out just fine, as 41 consecutive bogey-free holes turned into a 6-under 210 total – good for a one-shot victory over a trio of players, as well as the $8,100 first-place prize at the inaugural Championship at Carlton Oaks.
After opening his week with seven bogeys and a first-round 74 in heavy wind and rain, Gonzalez played flawlessly over his final 36 holes at host Carlton Oaks Golf Club, playing bogey-free golf en route to back-to-back 68s and a 6-under 210 tally. His 41 consecutive holes of birdies and pars gave way to career win No. 1 on eGolf West, but not without a few anxious moments.
The 26-year-old birdied three of his first six holes in Friday’s final round to reach 5-under par, then added a late birdie at the par-4 16th to round out his closing 68.
“I played today’s round with Craig Barlow, and the two of us never really looked at the leaderboard until the 16th tee,” said Gonzalez. “I kept telling myself, ‘Just do what you’ve been doing, don’t make a bogey, and try to throw a birdie in there.’”
In the house at 6-under par, Gonzalez waited as tour winner Erick Justesen birdied 11, 13 and 15 before paring his final three holes to finish the week at 5-under 211. Overnight co-leader Christopher Evans also reached 5-under with a birdie on 15 while playing alongside Justesen, but mimicked his playing partner with a three-par finish that left him one shot shy.
The day’s final twosome of Jake Sarnoff and Daniel Miernicki came to the par-4 finishing hole at 5-under and 4-under, respectively, needing a birdie and a miracle to catch the clubhouse leader.
When Miernicki failed to hole out his second shot and Sarnoff finished with a par, Gonzalez was left atop the leaderboard after a demanding week at Carlton Oaks.
“I get a lot out of what I put into it, so this is pretty rewarding for me,” Gonzalez said. “I’ve got PGA TOUR Canada Q-School next week, but I definitely plan to keep on playing eGolf depending on what happens.”
In college, Gonzalez starred at Cal Poly, winning three times in college, earning three NCAA Regional bids as an individual, but collecting the prized dream of west coast amateur golf in 2009 – the California State Amateur.
The $8,100 payday took Gonzalez up to No. 7 on the tour’s money list with $16,652 in earnings. The win marked his third straight top-10 on eGolf West – a streak that included a T2 at last week’s Cross Creek Classic.
Justesen, Evans and Sarnoff wound up tied for second at 5-under 211, with each player earning $4,191 on the week.
For Justesen, the T2 effort marked a third straight top-10 on eGolf West, in turn moving the Cal State-Stanislaus grad up to fifth on the tour’s money list with $16,690 in earnings. The 28-year-old earned his first tour title at Soboba Springs in February, then added a T7 at Cross Creek before delivering this week’s runner-up effort.
• The tour would like to thank head golf professional Chris Brown, tournament director Brett Baylin, and their staff for their help in making this first-year event a success.
• The tour will be off the next two weeks before returning to action with the Championship at PGA West on April 22-24, 2014.
