WEEKEND UPDATE: Gomez and Lamely Record Top-10 Finishes; Sims Narrowly Misses out on Tour Championship
Fabian Gomez
Miami, FL – October 19, 2009 – There is usually a veritable plethora of drama to be found at the Nationwide Tour's Miccosukee Championship. As the 2009 season's penultimate event, players are vying for spots in this week's season-ending Tour Championship – where the top 60 players on the money list will compete for their share of the $1 million dollar purse.
Entering the final round, eGolf Tour player Fabian Gomez of Argentina trailed 54-hole leaders Chad Collins and Justin Smith by just two shots. For Gomez, a 14-par final-round effort left him with a round of 71 and in a tie for fifth place. The finish marked his second top-five of the 2009 season and his first top-10 since a T9 finish at the Cox Classic in July. More importantly, the check for $23,750 moved him from No. 40 to No. 30 on the money list – just five spots shy of a place in the exclusive top 25. At the conclusion of the Tour Championship, the top 25 players on the money list will be awarded their 2010 PGA TOUR cards.
Roberto CastroFormer eGolf Tour member Derek Lamely has been arguably the hottest player of late on the Nationwide Tour, and that good play certainly continued last week in Miami. Lamely, who claimed his first win just over two months ago at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational, has since added two runner-up finishes and five total top-10 finishes to his 2009 resume – including a T7 effort at the Miccosukee Championship. With $367,486 in earnings this year, Lamely remained in third place on the 2009 Nationwide Tour money list, having already secured his TOUR card for next year.
Roberto Castro of Alpharetta, GA, who finished third on the 2009 eGolf Tour money list with $111,090, earned a spot in the Miccosukee Championship via his T6 finish at the Chattanooga Classic the week prior and made the most of his opportunity with rounds of 74-66-69-71 and a T12 result.
Tied for 12th with Castro was Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey, who entered the 2009 season with conditional PGA TOUR status, but wound up playing in 13 Nationwide Tour events (compared to 15 PGA TOUR events). Gainey's T12 effort marked his second straight top-15 finish on the Nationwide Tour and his eighth consecutive made cut.
Michael SimsThe real heartbreak in Miami unfortunately fell on 2009 eGolf Tour member Michael Sims. The Bermuda native entered the final round in a tie for fifth after rounds of 71-66-68, just three shots behind the overnight leaders. An outward nine of 2-over 37 took him out of contention for the title, but with nine holes remaining, he still had a shot at securing a spot in the top 60 on the money list, and therefore playing his way into the Tour Championship. Sims, who entered the final round at No. 65 on the money list, recorded double bogeys on Nos. 11 and 16 and closed with a 3-over 39 for a final-round 76. His final round struggles dropped him from a tie for fifth into a tie for 17th. The check for $9,062 moved the former University of Rhode Island standout up to No. 61 on the money list – just one spot shy of making the Tour Championship. In the end, one shot separated him from a spot in the season-ending event and the end of his season. A 72-hole total of 4-under 280, as opposed to 3-under 281, would have made the difference.
Other eGolf Tour players with good weeks in Miami include Luke List (T21), Keegan Bradley (T21), Kyle Reifers (T27), Jerod Turner (T32), Dustin Bray (T32), and Michael Clark II (T38).
