Four eGolf Gateway Tour Players Collect Top-15 Finishes at Hyundai Tournament of Champions
By Stewart Moore
Kapalua, Hawaii – The 2015 PGA TOUR season opened up at famed Kapalua Resort last weekend with the annual Hyundai Tournament of Champions – a winner’s only event featuring some of the best names in golf, all in the field courtesy of a TOUR win over the prior 52 weeks. A total of four former eGolf Gateway Tour players notched top-15 finishes in Hawaii, with 2007 tour winner Brendon Todd leading the way at 16-under par, tied for eighth.
Todd, a breakout star on the 2014 PGA TOUR and winner of the eGolf Gateway Tour’s Musgrove Mill Classic in 2007, opened his week with rounds of 69-67-69—205 (14-under) to sit tied for fifth heading into Monday’s final round.
The former Georgia Bulldog star, who earned his trip to Maui via a win at last May’s HP Byron Nelson Championship, was 3-under par through 16 holes in the final round before succumbing to a double-bogey on the 71st hole.
Todd made up for the late blunder with a birdie at the par-5 18th, good for a final-round 71 and a T8 finish – five shots out of the Jimmy Walker/Patrick Reed playoff (won by Reed on the first extra hole).
The top-10 marked Todd’s first in three starts thus far in the PGA TOUR’s 2014-15 season, and his first since a T4 at the Greenbrier Classic in July.
Former eGolf Gateway Tour winner Ben Martin, who collected his first career win at the tour’s Forest Oaks Classic in 2010, finished T11 at Kapalua with rounds of 67-72-70-69—278.
Chris Kirk
The finish was further continuation of a breakout season for the Greenwood, S.C. native, who won the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in October and currently sits at No. 3 on the FedEx Cup points list.
Other eGolf Gateway Tour alums to finish inside the top 15 include Chris Kirk and Scott Stallings, who tied for 14th at 13-under par.
Kirk, who competed on the eGolf Gateway Tour in 2009, birdied eight of his final 10 holes on Monday en route to a course-record, 11-under 62 on the Plantation Course. The final-round tear moved the former Georgia Bulldog up 19 spots on the closing leaderboard.
Other eGolf Gateway Tour players in the field at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions include two-year member Brian Harman (T17), three-year member Chesson Hadley (T20), FedEx Cup champion Billy Horschel (T22), Matt Every (T27) and Nick Taylor (T29).
