Davidson, NC – For the second straight day, the eGolf Tour’s seventh annual River Run Classic fell victim to area weather, as afternoon thunderstorms halted second-round play from 2:28 PM to 3:40 PM, in turn pushing the completion of 36 holes into Friday morning.
The River Run Classic is the 16th of 24 scheduled events on the 2013 eGolf Tour schedule, and is being contested this week at River Run Country Club in Davidson, NC – host of the Web.com Tour’s upcoming Chiquita Classic.
On Wednesday, opening-round play in the popular event was suspended at 5:01 PM due to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with play officially being called for the day at 7:00 PM when conditions failed to improve. It wasn’t until 11:45 AM on Thursday morning that everyone in the 133-player field was able to finish 18 holes, with the players who did so essentially going straight back out to the tee to start round two.
When play was suspended at 8:25 PM on Thursday night, the other half of the field was still on the course, yet to finish the second round. Second-round play will resume at 9:00 AM on Friday morning. Following the completion of 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 47 players and ties for the final round, which will begin shortly thereafter.
Of the players who managed to finish 36 holes, Roberto Diaz of Myrtle Beach, SC earned the unofficial overnight lead, posting rounds of 67-68—135 to reach 9-under par with 18 holes to play.
Diaz, a native of Veracruz, Mexico, was one of the players caught in Wednesday’s weather, in turn forced to finish his opening round on Thursday morning. The former USC-Aiken star overcame a double-bogey early on day one with four final-nine birdies to open with a 5-under 67, settling into solo-second place through 18 holes.
On Thursday afternoon, Diaz pared his first seven holes before posting birdies on 17 and 18 (his Nos. 8 and 9) to turn at 2-under 34. An unlikely bogey at the par-5 second dropped the former Pacer back to 1-under for the round, but follow-up birdies on Nos. 4, 5 and 8 moved him to 4-under, where he finished for a second-round 68.
The week marks Diaz’s first start of the year on the eGolf Tour, after five 2012 starts delivered two top-20 finishes, including a season-best T14 at the River Hills Classic.
The par-4 16th at River Run C.C.Hunter Green of Evensville, TN, making just his second career eGolf Tour start this week, is three shots back of Diaz after rounds of 70-68—138 left him at 6-under par. The 23-year-old began his week with two birdies and 16 consecutive pars in the opening round to sit at 2-under through 18 holes, just inside the top 10.
In his second round, Green found himself at even par through nine holes, but rallied with four birdies on his closing nine to finish up with a 4-under 68.
Green finished T9 in his first eGolf Tour start at the HGM Hotels Classic at Rock Barn just two weeks ago, posting rounds of 70-69-71-68—278 to wind up five shots back of winner Jesse Hutchins.
First-round leader Will Bowman of Greensboro, NC, who finished up a 6-under 66 before the day one storms hit, was still on the course when second-round play was suspended due to darkness.
Four-time eGolf Tour winner Ryan Nelson of Charleston, SC was in the only threesome to finish 36 holes in the afternoon wave. The two-time U.S. Open participant posted rounds of 69-70—139 to move to 5-under par – four shots back of Diaz.
Second-round play in the River Run Classic will resume at 9:00 AM on Friday morning. Players should be in the cart staging area, ready to return to their holes via cart at 8:50 AM.
The final round is “tentatively” scheduled to start at 12:00 PM on Friday, with players competing in threesomes off of Nos. 1 and 10. All players should check the website for additional updates.
